Cancer Facts

  • One of every four U.S. deaths is due to cancer.
  • Each year 1993 through 2003, over 9,000 West Virginians were diagnosed with cancer.
  • Cancer is the second leading cause of death in West Virginia, second only to heart disease and results in the greatest number of years of potential life lost.
  • The leading causes of cancer-related mortality for women are lung, breast and colorectal. For men, they are lung, prostate and colorectal.
  • If current trends continue, nearly one-third of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes.
